Frequently Asked Questions

What is "mp3" ?
MP3 or "MPEG 1 Layer III" as it is called, is a high quality but "lossy" music compression format. It provides compression rates up to 12:1 witout any noticeable loss in sound quality. This makes it the perfect format for distributing 44,1 kHz 16 bit stereo cd-quality music over the internet. A 3 minute song in uncompressed cd-quality is up to 35 MB (!) in filelength, and compressed with mp3 its only about 3 (!) MB in size without noticing any difference in sound quality.

What is a "music module" ?
Music modules are a music format that originally comes from the Commodore AMIGA. This first mod format had only up to 16 different instruments, each of them 8 bit 22 kHz maximum sample quality, four different channels, and a length limit of of 64 kb per instrument. Although for today this seems quite low quality, the mod music format was perfect for creating music for all kinds of games, demos and everything else, and soon it became the most popular format for music data on the AMIGA. Later the mod format was extendet to 32 different instruments and mod editing software like the worldfamous "ProTracker" was written, making sound creation even more popular. Soon other platforms developed replaying software for mods, and the mod format spread over to MACs, IBM-PCs and many other systems. On some platforms such as the PC, so called "extendet modules" improved the sound quality of mods by giving them up to 256 different channels, 44,1 kHz 16 bit cd-quality stereo samples and unlimited sample length, some even have real time effects such as echo, reverb, and synthetic instruments.
